A Ghostly Tale

A ghost haunts
The halls
Of our new house.

Creaky floorboards
In the midst of night
Reveal possible hiding places

Footsteps
On the roof
Sound like cat burglars
Trying to be stealthy.

Shattered glass
Breaks the silence.

On the floor
Lies the shadow
Of a brick poltergeist.

Haiku

A girl
With chicken pox
Polka dots.

Bright lights
Flicker carelessly –
Pickup sticks.

Magnolia tree
Rises from the earth –
Sunshine

Knowledge grows
On trees –
Cash crops

Away with the Fairies

A fairy sleeps
In my Grandma’s cabinet

Trapped inside
A glass globe,
You have to shake
To bring to life.

Dressed in a lotus flower
That lost its sparkle.

She has a pair of wings
That cannot set her free,
So she sits in the darkness.

It’s not that special
I actually forgot
I had it.

Stars litter
The sky
Space junk

A willow sways
To bellbirds music
Nature’s song

The library wall
Covered in squares
Checkerboard

Twink spillage
Wandering over the page
Dripping candle wax

Wally Wallaby

Cockatoos squawk at tourists
In Australia zoo.

Bandicoots
Huddle in cages
Like refugees
From a poacher’s wilderness.

Wally the wallaby
Is one of a kind.

His family
Threatened
To become extinct.

As he hops around,
A pouch sags
Like a handbag.

Coming out
Of his closet,
Wally the wallaby
Is really a woman.

A flag flaps
in nor’west wind
An albatross soars

Bullies prowl
on school fields
Sharks in rough waters

The ball wall
firing range
children stand blind-folded

A child schlurps
strings of spaghetti
Magpies search for worms

Looking out the car window:
houses become trees,
shops merge into paddocks,
traffic jams transform
into crystal clear rivers

People in shopping malls
are grazing cattle,
chewing the cud
of last season’s fashion.

Fantails and sparrows sing
in wild willows,
where monkeys
used to play
in concrete jungles.

Moving from the city,
to the country.
Nature’s instinct
is awakened,
